Walnut Coffee Table – Live edge wood slab
Live edge walnut slabs that have been stored for about ten years appeared when cleaning out some wood bins so a new lumber load could be stored. The live edge slab was from a small bandsaw mill so all it took to convert the 17 inch wide slab into a coffee table top was belt sander, random orbital sander and card scraper. The slab was shorten to 5 feet and the sawn edge roughen with a rasp and wire brush to blend it with the slab’s live edges. Several coats of wipe on polyurethane after the oil finish was left to dry for...

Pedestal tables serve multiple functions. They will hold a plant, serve as a lamp stand, a convenient holder of that drink next to your armchair or in bygone days it was home for the ashtray. A traditional design is shown in American black walnut. It stands 24 inches with a slightly lipped edge16 inches top. Other suggested woods for this traditional table includes Cherry, Mahogany and maple. Painted surfaces are appropriate. Pedestal design will vary slightly because of characteristic of the wood stock. The original design for the pedestal...

A pearlized finish falls between paint that obscures the wood surface with colorant and a natural wood finish that the grain pattern shows through. This multilayered finish gives the surface a translucent qualilty with tints of color similar to light striking a pearl’s surface. This plant stand made from ash stands 24 inches high with a 13 inch top and a 7 inch shelf. Others have ordered this table as a painted table or in natural finish (oak).

The painted surface has a tradition that mirrors what is considered the finest period of furniture design and manufacturing. The surface can fool the eye (faux) or it serves as defining the piece’s function. Faux surface Using layers of stain, pigments and over-coats of varnish provides the base to create the illusion of weathering, wear and tear. The appearance is intensified by sanding through the layers. This client wanted the appearance that the table materials came from a worn old factory floor. Pier table shown has a Faux marble...

This a simple table that does not require great woodworking skill and would be ideal for a begining woodworker to try. The design resulted from an afternoon on the deck and my wife complainted that she needed somewhere to place her drink. I knocked out the prototype that afternoon from scrap stock and a tile leftover from tiling the bathroom. Refining the construction and reverting to cypress with suitable outdoor varnish (marine teak oil) gives it outdoor durability[shown below]. Combining this finish with the folding design that allows you...

This Cherry table can serve many functions. It uses the same natural finish seen in the above table but the protective top coat is a waterborne polyurethane – the oxymoron of going “green” while using a media that deplete forests. The top is 46 inches long and is 14 inches at the widest part of the arc. The table stands on 16 by 48 inches footprint.

My father copied this table from a piece that sat next to his bed and held the phone. He probably reproduced this table 30 times. I have made at least 15 copies over the years. The size is somewhat flexible – minimum top size 16 inches (square) – maximum 22 inches (square) with oblong sizes between these square dimensions (example 16 X 20). The minimum overhang is 1.5 inches per size. Simple square tapered legs establish a height between 28 to 30 inches. The apron width 4.5 to 6.5 inches. A single dovetail constructed drawer...

Barn Pine salvaged from a tobacco barn built by my grandfather around 1910 became a kitchen table for his great grandson. Termites and rot of the partially log and partially framed building made the barn needed unusable. Enough lumber could be reclaimed to construct a requested a 4 feet by 6 feet table. The table sits on simple four-sided tapered legs. Rounding all table edges removed sharp corners and made the table more “child friendly”. A durable and easy to care for finish of multiple coats of Waterlox varnish protected the...

In 2005 a medical condition closed the woodshop to major projects for about 4 months. The recovery period provided the opportunity to investigate method of veneering wood surfaces. The first veneer prototype created a backgammon board. The playing triangles were shop made veneer from walnut and maple scraps. Embedded in a cork surface and trimmed with mahogany rails this project provided a quick learning curve. A friend seeing this protoype requested a reversible board with chess on one side and backgammon on the other. Making chess boards...

A law firm requested a medium size table for their new conference room. They wanted a natural light color wood and a 10 feet by 6 feet size. The other design specifications and materials were nil. An unique opportunity to purchase about 100 board feet of sycamore provided the light colored wood. Sycamore is not a traditional primary furniture wood and it is often relegated to using as drawer parts or other secondary functions. This choice is unfortunate because when quarter sawn it reveals a wavy interlaced grain pattern. Although the...
