Mission Style
What I think of as mission style may be classified by others as Arts and Crafts. I view the style as “square” highlighted with arches and spindles substitues for solid panels. White Oak was wood of choice for the majority of furniture made of this style. The examples shown here used American Black Walnut instead.
The plant stand/side table was originally designed because a client had an extra tile left over from a renovation of fireplace surround that I did. The tile inlay was the perfect protective surface for the plant stand that customer wanted. This photograph represents the second reproduction in walnut with a oil and varnish finish. It stands 24 inches tall with a 18 inch square top sitting on a 14 inches base. The person who brought this table commented that the ceramic tile inlay was perfect for a table to sit next to his lazy boy chair that will not show a water stain from the beer can.
The rich color and texture of black walnut lead to him order of the sofa table shown below. In addition, this customer ordered (not shown) at 42X28 coffee table (15 inches tall) and two sofa side table (20X24) 24 inches tall that used to same design of side spindles and a bottom solid shelf.
The sofa table is 48 inches long with a 14 inch top and 11 X 42 inches base. The table stands at 30 inches so it can sit behind the standard sofa. The appropriate size hall would be another good home. This piece has an oil finished top coated with lacquer.
